Cats are obligate carnivores. They require nutrients found only in meat, including taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A. Without these, cats can develop serious health problems including blindness and heart disease.

Unlike dogs or humans, cats cannot synthesize these nutrients from plant sources. Their digestive systems evolved specifically to process meat.
